The Practice Enhancement Consultant (PEC) is a field-based advisor working directly with clinicians and their practices to identify goals and develop plans for advancing their Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and other eHealth Solutions usage and capabilities to improve patient and practice outcomes.

The PEC plans and coordinates OntarioMD resources working with the practice and provides transition support and change management to physicians to prepare, implement and use eHealth solutions supported by OntarioMD.

Working with the Senior Manager, Practice Improvement and Education, your responsibilities will be:
  • Works collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team under the direction of the Practice Improvement & Education Manager and Practice Enhancement Lead.  
  • Supports the key focus areas of OMD Advisory Service and guides and directs EMR users through the process of EMR improvement accordingly.  
  • Creates digital health best practices knowledge base for practice and patient outcome.
  • Supports creation of educational content and knowledge management. Creating tools and instructions for dissemination.
  • Applies QI and change management principles to clinical practice, recognizing the dynamics, drivers, financial and political constraints of a typical practice setting. 
  • Guides and directs the efforts of the EMR improvement cycle and works collaboratively with OntarioMD Peer Leaders, EMR Technical Specialists and Practice Advisors as well as external resources and stakeholders. 
  • Provides coaching and facilitation support to improve clinical workflow efficiencies through the optimized use of digital health based on the individual needs of physician practices. 
  • Foster critical thinking and teaching data analysis, performance measures, and assessing workflow,
  • Transfers knowledge and skill to clinicians through various coaching and training settings to empower clinicians for practice and care improvement.
  • Optimize educational processes leveraging varied learning technologies and modalities; lead discussions; encourage knowledge/experience/insight sharing; promote self-discovery; and exploration of alternative thinking/solutions.
  • Participation and support for the pilot and proof of concept projects, creating new innovative use of digital health in support of clinical and patient care challenges.
  • Providing guidance on digital health use to internal departments in support of new design and development initiatives (usability perspectives).
  • Keep up to date knowledge of digital health technologies best practices & third-party offerings.
  • Support and advise MOH & OH in design development and dissemination of digital health initiatives.
  • Cultivate relationship and partnerships with external stakeholders in support of OntarioMD strategic directions.
  • Active support and participation in OntarioMD business development and partnership opportunities.
  • Explore and propose opportunities for advancing digital health utilization aligned with provincial mandates and OntarioMD interest.
  • Facilitates regular communication with and between physicians on best practices and advanced features in optimizing EMR functionality through forums, user group meetings, workshops, etc. 
  • Works with OntarioMD product areas to develop targeted plans for promotion and adoption of eHealth initiatives within the practice community. 
  • Maintains an up-to-date practice profile and activity tracking in the CRM system (practice membership, IT system configuration, etc.).
  • Collaborates in the assignment and coordination of resources including Peer Leaders, the Practice Advisor, and EMR Technical Specialists as required.   
  • Maintains relationships with key local stakeholders including OH, OHT staff, universities, OntarioMD partners, EMR and other IT vendors. 
  • Provides coaching and facilitation to Communities of Practice (COP), as applicable. 
  • Assists in communication regarding new e-Health and other initiatives. In conjunction with PA. 
  • Contributes to knowledge creation and development of coaching and education contents for best practices and quality improvement.
Requirements that are important to us:
  • Degree in Health Services, eHealth, Medical Informatics, Health Information Management, Business Administration or related field, or an equivalent combination of work experience and education. 
  • 5+ years of experience in a healthcare role, clinical practice role, manager role, particularly related to clinical workflow process redesign and practice processes using EMRs in a community practice settings. 
  • Strong project management and business analyst skills and experience with practice change management initiatives. 
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in QI projects, preferably around digital health use as change idea.
  • Experienced in training and delivering group presentations and facilitating focus groups and workshops.
  • Excellent coaching/facilitation skills and strong conflict resolution skills.
  • Certification, knowledge, and experience on Quality Improvement in Healthcare. 
  • Certification and/or advanced knowledge/skill in change management in healthcare.
  • Solid Understanding of EMR vendor services, constraints, and core business drivers. 
  • Understanding of IT dependency, particularly in EMRs and how IT is applied in clinical practices. 
  • Working knowledge of EMRs and major e-Health solutions. 
  • Understand how to address barriers to allow physicians to move forward along the EMR maturity model.
  • Understand how to map physician/practice workflows around enhanced use to functionality within the various EMRs and digital health solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to build rapport and work with multiple stakeholder groups. Demonstrated customer service orientation and account management acumen an asset. 
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Highly flexible and comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-profile environment.
